Welcome to the Match Lake

January 2007 the Match Pool and Specimen Pool were joined to create a new 65 peg Match Lake. This new lake covers an approximate area of 5 acres and has 3 islands. The new lake has been intensively stocked with F1's, but none of the existing stock from either pool has been removed. This lake now creates a venue for match, specimen and pleasure anglers, which caters for all types of angling methods. Pole, feeder and waggler.

The floods of summer 2007 devastated the lake, both the banking and stocking were hit. Extensive work has been carried out to mend, replace and renew damaged banking and pegs. All pegs are now available and safe. During 2009 extensive stocking will be taking place to bring the lake to a very high standard for match fishing. Soon it is hoped to hold regular 65 peg open matches.

In preparation for the open matches the lakes own car park has been extended to hold 70 cars.

Specimen Pool - Pre 2007

Specimen Pool

The Specimen Lake was the first of the waters built at Heronbrook Fisheries back in 1994. The lake is an "L" shaped lake with three islands. Being around 3 acres in size it comfortably holds 40 anglers. The main island is long and within easy casting distance from the banking, making it ideal for feeder or waggler fishing. The two smaller islands are close enough to pole fish around the margins of them. The depth ranges from 2 feet in the margins to 8 feet in some areas, on average though a peg is between 4 - 5 feet deep.

The lake is absolutely stuffed with fish of all sizes. Catches of 200 lb + are taken throughout the year, the main quarry being the large carp, bream and tench. In the summer months the larger fish seem to dominate, but don't forget the roach as you can easily catch 20 lb of these by fishing close in with smaller baits. There is plenty of sport with the vast amount of other fish, ghost carp, crucian carp, roach, rudd, cub and perch. The lake is not as heavily match fished as the other lake because it always seems to be a favourite of the pleasure angler.

The Specimen Lake is popular with the more serious carp fisherman, with bivvys and pods often seen along the right hand banking where there is ample room. Targeting and sitting it out waiting for the larger carp can often bring that fish of a lifetime, with the common and mirror carp going over the 30 lb mark. There are many 10 lb & 20 lb + carp to keep you interested while you wait for the big ones.

Big weights are taken fishing the feeder up to the islands, but don't forget the bream, as they can be caught regularly on sweetcorn or caster fishing close in. The pole is very productive targeting the carp on large baits such as bread, meat or sweetcorn. Waggler fishing produces well all year round as the more timid of fish can be added to your catch as they stay further from the banking than the other fish.

The match record was set at a new high on Sunday the 11th April 2004 during the Spring League. Paul Coyle was pegged in the middle of the second island. He fished the pole at 16 meters with corn as bait, taking chub, ghost carp, common carp and mirror carp, none of the fish were above 5 lb in weight. Paul had a cracking net of fish for the new total of 145 lb

Match Pool - Pre 2007

Match Pool

The Match Pool is the second water of Neil's designs to be added to the fishery in 1994. An oblong shape consisting of 26 pegs the water has a large island within reach of every peg. The main method of fishing here is by pole, anywhere from the near margins to tight up to the island produces great catches. The right hand side being a little wider it is ideal for a change of style and a bit of waggler fishing. The depth of the water varies from 4 feet to 6 feet, a shelf at 6 meters drops away to the deeper water that runs right up to the island.

Fabulous catches of crucian carp can be taken fishing in the shallow water close in during summer, 40 lb to 50 lb of them are common in summer. The larger carp, mirrors and commons are usually taken tight up to the island on bread, meat or sweetcorn, but you can catch them on the bottom between 6 & 11 metres by using meat, sweetcorn or paste. Feeder fishing tight to the island is also a good alternative method. The Match Pool is also a superb winter venue. The winter match record stands at 103 lb

The Match Pool is also well stocked with a variety of species which include ghost, common & mirror carp, tench, bream, ide, roach, perch, rudd, golden rudd, crucian carp and chub.

The pool now has platforms large enough for wheelchairs on all bankings. Access to the lake by car is for disabled anglers only by taking the right hand side of the Specimen Lake. To reach the Match Pool by foot, take the path on the left hand side of the Specimen Lake.

A new match record (135 lb 4 oz) was set on the 9 th June 2004 by Steve Ringer during a UK Individual Championship practice match. The following week during the actual event itself the record fell again. It was Andy Oldham's turn to set a new weight. Andy drew the same peg as Steve and raised the record to 146 lb 8 oz. Andy's catch included carp up to 10 lb, commons, mirrors and ghosties were all taken on pellet and meat up to the island.
